Photowalk: Elche

After a couple great days in Barcelona, I made my way down south to visit the region of Alicante. During this time of year, Spain has a celebration of the 3 wise men, or the 3 kings (Los Reyes Magos en Elche). People have a parade in the street and eat rascon (a type of cake, it’s like a big cream filled cookie).

One thing I *also* did not know was that kids run in the streets with TREE BRANCHES THAT ARE ON FIRE. When I first got down to Elche, I thought I was arriving in the middle of a riot!

Luckily, my friend Ana told me that it was just a tradition. Sounds nice. There was a little baby – probably around the age of two (yes, two) – waving around a stick that was on fire while the dad video taped. Oh no worries, nothing bad could happen from that.

In addition to that, they also host a fight with fireworks to celebrate. Here’s a video from a previous year (cut to about 1 min)

Anyways, Elche was a pretty fun place! It’s a little bit lesser known than others, but definitely a unique part of Spanish culture. Will probably make it back for one of these parades in the years to come : )

Lisa - I agree- the red/yellow/white squares one is strangely fascinating. Love it!February 16, 2011 – 5:48 pm

Tim - Thanks guys! @Jason, yeah, I don’t know how to explain it – I just get drawn to patterns whenever I think of photos! @Andrew – I actually set up the camera on a ledge or railing, and did a long exposure. Settings were iso 50, f6.3, and 20 seconds.February 15, 2011 – 3:24 am

Andrew - Nice pictures dude! Love the boats picture and was wondering what the shot info was for that one. Wonder what that would look like as an HDR image.February 14, 2011 – 7:03 pm

Ed Harry - Nice shots, Tim!February 14, 2011 – 10:48 am

Rich - Awesome photos Tim!February 14, 2011 – 9:08 am

Jason Kirby - Yea that video is nuts! But I really like your consistency with using symmetry in most of your images. I have been noticing that pattern amongst your travel photos. I am liking itFebruary 14, 2011 – 8:45 am

Mike - That video is insane…looks like LA after a championshipFebruary 14, 2011 – 8:22 am

Ali - Whoa cool! I really liked the one with the yellow & black writing and the one with all the squares…you make every place look so crazy! Or maybe Europe is just like that… :o)February 14, 2011 – 8:21 am
