Portrait practice and the KEY reasons to have a photog friend on yo’ level

When Maria first brought up the idea of the trip to Russia to me, I completely dismissed it. Russia?  Me? Not anytime soon.  (Or so I thought.)  I’ve always had Russia on my bucketlist, but for some reason I’ve always considered it to be something I would do a few years down the line.  I...

Natalia - Tim!

What an amazing post!
I was in Russia in 2007. And it was a shock for me too, but pleasant one. Everything was different comparing with Europe, but at the same time there are a lot of things in common.
I adore St. Petersburg and its bohemian, full of history places.
Moscow impressed with Red Square (I really loved!), Cathedral of Christ the Savior, Bolshoi Theater, Novodevichy Monastery… history was written in these places.
I would go one more time to Russia …only for food probably. It is really delicious and unique! And of course, bread bear! :)
It’s huge country and undoubtedly there are so many places to see and new things to experience.
Thanks a lot for sharing! Wish you new interesting trips!

If loving you is wrong, I don’t want to be right

I’ve met a lot of photographers who are adamant about being “technically correct” when it comes taking photos. But you know what? Sometimes, being technically correct – sometimes just DOESN’T DO IT. For the most part, I like to think of my style as clean, fresh, fun, and modern. At times though, I think it...

Ashley Goodwin - Seriously interesting, for real! I have often wondered if I should go more “event” processing than “me” processing sometimes, and this totally worked. Especially love the italian place, you really thought about that one! & who in the heck has a VIP reception and then broadcasts it to the other patrons that can’t get in? I’d love to hear a little bit more about that one, not sure if I’m sold, but I’m sure you’d sell me on the tactic. :)
xoJune 22, 2011 – 9:59 am

s h e r r y - Awesome stuff. The post-processing you chose definitely fits each of these events! I find myself being more consistent than daring. I really should challenge myself to change it up a bit. I have a preset that I use to gently tweak each image, and then I’ll mess with them individually some more. I’ve been thinking of doing more b/w lately too! Gotta try it! :)June 21, 2011 – 10:21 pm

Megs - YES! Amen, amen, amen. Here is to letting your eyes choose. :) LOVE THIS POST.June 21, 2011 – 4:03 pm

Ben Nash - Yeah man, I hear ya. I like to use LR presets a lot! And I like making an image unique. Photography is always changing, so I think for photographers, a lot of what they produce will be changing. Maybe not a lot, but some. Unless your old school, and take the same kind of shots and edit them the same every time, I think inside of creativity you can have a lot of change. I agree that it’s probably good to stay consistent, but also creativity will create change and inconsistency to some level. Sweet pics man! I really like the Italian restaurant pics. Keep em’ coming. I admire your work.June 21, 2011 – 8:08 am

Jen - You could easily rename this list “ways to make Jen feel bad about her life”

Just saying :)

That said, take pictures as you go so I can live vicariously through you. K?December 9, 2011 – 10:27 am

Melinda - Wow, your bucket list is amazing! I have so much that I want to do in life as well. I Love your photography- so beautiful!September 9, 2011 – 4:25 pm

Lila - I’ll take you up on number 84.

Great post. Reading this makes me want to find the list I made back 10 yrs ago in high school and see what has happen. I also realize that some of the things we have done are taken for granted while others make bucketlists wishing to do those things. I grew up in NY so we visited the statue of liberty every year as a field trips at school and my parents would take us every time someone visit us and we had to go site seeing.

Good luck with your bucket list. I look forward to reading about your journey.August 2, 2011 – 9:24 am

SarahV - Love it all and wish I could join on a few of these! I’m excited to see the pictures of your list progression!August 2, 2011 – 7:24 am

Klaus @ TechPatio - Interesting list :) I also learned a few things by reading it through, like the biggest tree in the world and about the ice hotel in Sweden.

Best of luck to you, with your list!February 17, 2011 – 11:30 am

Russel Hutchinson - Be careful with #57…that stuff is nuts!February 11, 2011 – 1:18 am

Alyssa Cruz - That photo is awesome Tim! It almost doesn’t even look real!February 8, 2011 – 11:09 am

Jason Kirby - I am loving this list. I just want to copy and paste it for my own. I am definitely down to team up on a few of these. When you get back in town and we go paintballing we can discuss details.

I hope you are enjoying SpainFebruary 7, 2011 – 3:34 pm

Derrick Rennold - Awesome pics, my favorite would actually have to be the one where the guy is walking down the street, and the shot is out of focus except for the light flares. The rest of the shots are great, but I guess I really just like the abstract feel/story of the photo. Cool stuff man!November 14, 2010 – 1:46 pm

Ray Padmore - Hey Tim! Great shots! It was a pleasure meeting you while you were in town, love the photos. Give me a hollar if you’re ever in town again, will do the same if I ever make the venture out to SD!October 14, 2010 – 10:01 pm

Brandon - Ahhhh, nice stuff Timmy! You should print some of these out and put em up on the wall!October 15, 2010 – 11:54 am

Kim Mathers - Hahaha that shot of the ‘models’ is hilarious – you were right, they totally do have that modelesque look. I can’t imagine what else you probably saw there, but New York is a different world on it’s own. Doesn’t have to be fashion week for you to be seeing people dressed all fancy and such, that’s what I love about that place. So cool you got to be there right around fashion week, I bet it was super cool to see everyone so formal/fashion forward

Ok I’m gonna stop writing this novel on your blog now, but I just wanted to check out the photos, you have an awesome style, and I’m jealous of all your travels. See you soon!October 11, 2010 – 11:35 am

Rachel Phelps - W.O.W. Tim! You have just convinced me to buy a ticket out there to visit that city, it looks so cool in all your photos, I’m sure you had a blast!
Did you know anyone out there or were you just staying at hotels or something? I really want to go out there but I don’t know anyone, and I feel like it is a place I need to go, but I’ve also heard the hotels are super expensive!
Ahhh lolOctober 5, 2010 – 6:01 pm

Luis Ortega - Awesome job man. The details in these photos are great! I wonder what that police/gov escort was all about in those top photos…the shot you got at Times Square with all the cabs is super sick, I hope you weren’t in front of them when they started to go though lol. Nice pairing of the red bike & the red building on the left, not sure if anyone noticed that – or if you even intended to do that on purpose lolOctober 5, 2010 – 4:59 pm

Brian - You were right man…what a playground for a photographer! Man I could get lost taking photos there, you must have been in heaven!October 3, 2010 – 10:39 am

Angela Faulkner - “Ain’t times square”

So awesome. I love it. It’s cool to see when people can get creative with using something that’s already there. Kind of a mini version of that ‘subway boy’ graffiti artist or whatever was running around New York this yearOctober 2, 2010 – 5:12 pm

Sarah Langley - Oh my god that dog is huge! Wow I want one!!! Of course it would probably destroy my house lolOctober 2, 2010 – 9:45 am

Tim Durand - Sweet shots of the buildings in the first photo. Looks like it was somewhere near the financial district or something – the shape makes it unique, I don’t think there are many like that in other parts of the cityOctober 1, 2010 – 7:33 pm

Jesse Hewitt - Awesome pics man – I love the graffiti shots you got, brooklyn is such an awesome place to get those kind of photos tooOctober 1, 2010 – 6:43 pm

Ken Raynell - Great shots at the end there in grand central station. I really like the light balance going on, has a classy look to itOctober 8, 2010 – 9:15 am

Josh Delgado - To add to Matt’s comment, you gotta check out the lower west side (financial district & battery park) and long island if you have the time. New York is an awesome city, and it’s hard to get to see everything you want to see in even just a week’s time. I’m not sure how long you were there or whatever, but I feel like it takes a few trips to see everything in its complete glory.October 4, 2010 – 11:57 am

Chris Reyes - That shot of the couple standing in grand central station is great, cool to have the motion all around them while they’re planted in the middle. Nice job in the creative framing of these shots – the brooklyn bridge looks awesome at night!October 2, 2010 – 7:23 pm

Frances Valdez - Aw they’re such a cute couple! That girl looks like she’s a model or somethingOctober 2, 2010 – 3:11 pm

Matt Salazar - NY is an awesome town. If you’re still around you should check out soho and williamsburg – cool eclectic spots in their own regardOctober 1, 2010 – 1:09 pm

David Triggs - Cool shots! You could get lost taking photos in central park alone in one dayOctober 1, 2010 – 11:47 am

Jamie Vargas - How did you pick on where to do these photos? The city is soooooooooooooo gorgeous!! I <3 NY!October 1, 2010 – 9:51 am

Mary Porter - I’m jealous of how much you travel. NY looks like so much fun! I’ve never been, but I’ve wanted to go FOREVER. Will you take me there next time you go? And we can get some fun photos in central park too? :o)September 30, 2010 – 2:31 pm
