Roller Coaster BDay Adventure

So I’m writing to you from NYC, last night I arrived in town just 20 minutes late to catch my connecting flight home to Colorado.  But it was all worth it, because the delay on the flight leaving Europe allowed me to see the sight pictured below! In either case, I’m not going to let...

The Deeper Side of Photography

I’m coming up on my 4-year anniversary of when I started my photography business, and looking back – I’ve learned A TON. Not only about gear, business strategy, or how to take a good photo – but mainly about MYSELF as a person. If someone were to have told me everything that’s involved in being...

Alex - Powerful post because I relate to every single point on this. Beautifully written, I’m sharing this for sure! Great job!January 25, 2012 – 9:31 am

Kimiko - I just wanted to say that there are so several photography blogs I go to (that I love:) and just scan through their current work. Of course I love to see your latest ventures as well but I truly love these types of posts. I so appreciate how authentic, honest, and willing to put it all out there you are. It makes you more than just a brand:) so thanks for being awesome!!January 21, 2012 – 11:11 am

Christy - I look forward to learning some stuff!January 20, 2012 – 4:30 pm

Lauren - There is something liberating about realizing that everything you ever wanted is in your control and with some confidence and self enlightenment you can find joy is everything you have and continue to learn and grow. This is a pretty awesome blog, tim, personal, but inspiring too.January 20, 2012 – 1:46 pm

John Payne - Powerful post, my friend. You speak the truth. Very well put. Thanks!January 20, 2012 – 11:29 am

Sara - This post couldn’t be more perfectly timed for me – thank you so much for sharing! I am right in the middle of the being-scared-shitless phase and it’s so encouraging to know that it turns around somewhere out there (and that I’m not the only one!). I’ve recently accepted that I really do love my full-time job and want to have success in that industry – which means my photography will grow at a slower pace. Being okay with that is challening every part of my over-achieving nature – but I’m learning to search out experiences that add value rather than throwing myself into just any shoot.January 20, 2012 – 10:15 am

tracey - And one other thing while I’m here commenting… Things I’d like to hear your take on: branding, logo, website – where does one begin when thinking about these things. I think it is important to have a professional look online where people can go to learn about a photographer. But as a photographer we master the camera and our technique, how do you apply that same toward building your professional image online (branding, logo, website)?January 20, 2012 – 10:07 am

tracey - The more I visit your blog the more I fall “in love” with your work. Not literally in love but I think you know the point I’m trying to make. I like that you’re insightful. It’s easy to Google things and learn things by watching YouTube vids or whatever, but you bring a personal touch to your posts that you can’t Google. I’m happy that you started blogging more and I look forward to reading more of your insights :)January 20, 2012 – 9:53 am

Dustin Robbins - Awesome! Very clear and to the point. I can relate and all very key points. Look forward to the upcoming post.January 20, 2012 – 9:44 am

Edward Harry - Very nice post, Tim. [Publishing a self-help book could be in your future. Seriously.]

For me… I’ve gotta take steps to move beyond shooting stripper funerals.January 20, 2012 – 9:37 am

SarahV - Love hearing what you have to say, Tim. I really do hope that I get the chance to hang out with you for at least a couple of hours one day – I think it would do wonders for me in more ways than you can imagine.January 20, 2012 – 9:25 am

Ben Hemstad - Great points Tim. Photography really does reveal a lot about a person, and shows a lot about their character in terms of what they decide to put out there in terms of content.January 20, 2012 – 8:51 am

Paige Overturf - awesome post! You nailed that first point! (all of them, actually…but I was just talking to a friend about this earlier.) Looking forward to more posts. Thanks for being willing to share!!January 20, 2012 – 6:13 am

January “To Do” List

As opposed to New Years resolutions (I feel like facebook/twitter is clogged with false promises these days), I like to approach things month-by-month this year, as I feel like 30 days can only handle ‘so much’ – that, and the fact that I think about launch dates according to other events & timing. If it were the end of the world

I read a quote the other day that went something like this: “If you knew that it was the last time you were going to see one of your friends alive, how tightly would you hug them?” It hit me. Hard. And it got me to thinking, (with the Mayan prophecy & all) if this...

Dan - Tim, I think you’d like this book: http://www.amazon.com/Education-Millionaires-What-Think-Portfolio/dp/1591844207/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

He profiles and interviews a number of successful people who lacked formal education (or college/high-school dropouts) who gained their smarts in the real world.

For example, Walt Disney had to bathe once a week in Central Station when he was starting out because no one would buy his cartoons. And he talks about what they all had in common – the traits of the “Entrepreneurial” (contributor) mind-set vs the “Employee” (entitlement) mind-set.

Anyway, what I really wanted to say was, my friend Jessica runs a marketing agency for non-profits (dogoodcomm.com) and they perform lots of philanthropic endeavours… including high school workshops and teaching. If you’re feeling a lack of fulfillment on the philanthropic side it could be a good introduction for you (I’m sure they’d love your work as well).

Dale - Hey Tim, Great idea for a post. I’ve blogged every day for over a thousand days in a row and I’ll tell all those photogs who are nervous about being able to do – once you make it a priority, it doesn’t seem so bad. In my mind, it’s not a question of “should I blog today?” – instead it’s “what specifically should I blog today?” Those two words at the beginning make a really big difference. I take the escape route right out of the equation. I’ve found that as I’m more and more consistent with my blogging, the more and more people come back daily (or subscribe) to the blog. The end result is that I’m on my clients’/potential clients’minds every morning when they open their inbox or sign in to the rss reader, etc. It’s been well worth the time investment. Thanks for coming up with a fun way to keep each other accountable!December 7, 2011 – 9:15 pm

Kaitlyn Hanrahan - I love this! I have a travel blog [http://blog.kait.us/] that is pretty far behind, maybe 30 posts will get me up to present day. I’ve been back-date-ing my posts so the date reflects when I was somewhere (rather than when I’m finally writing about it). That might make it hard to see that I’m following the rules from my blog, but I’ll tweet new posts to @kait3210 to compensate. Excitement!December 7, 2011 – 8:18 pm

Ed Devereaux - This interests me on so many levels. There is the fact that it may force me to be more eloquent, detailed and informative on my posts, I tend to write in short sentences. I will have to have ideas prepared ahead of time. http://www.sabotimages.com/blog.htmlDecember 7, 2011 – 1:32 pm

Chantale Perron - Tim, I’m hoping I’m not too late to join in on this awesome challenge!?!?
Blogging has always been a huge effort for me – I blog every couple of months, and feel like I’ll never find enough topics, or nobody wants to hear it anyways. EEEEk! I know I “should” blog more often from a business perspective, but I totally struggle with it. This challenge is seriously the push I need to get me going!!

Please say it isn’t too late…..pppppppppplease!!

Saundra McBride - Ok, so I’m in. For several weeks now I’ve put off updating my blog. (I am in the middle of totally changing my photography business and it’s look) Every excuse in the book. Well, maybe some legit ones were in there, anyway. When a photographer like Tim, puts something like this out there, well, you’d be crazy not to jump in because you know in 30 days you will be better for it, you will learn a lot about yourself, and it will be amazing.

My blog, (bless it’s pitiful heart) http://saundramcbridephotography.wordpress.com/

Have a great evening!
SaundraDecember 6, 2011 – 6:25 pm

That isn’t stopping me from checking in on the participants, though. I’m excited to see the content they manage to produce over 30 consecutive days (I start getting a headache just thinking about it). And, dude, they have to be serious entries. If not now, when?

This past year has been the best year of my life. I’ve had 5 ‘trips of a lifetime‘ in the past 9 months. Why? How? Because I decided to just start LIVING. There was no pivotal moment, but rather an on-going desire to get out and experience all of what life has to offer. (There’s...

Christy - Tim, i’ve been following you since I saw you on the Creative Live thingy with Jasmine Star. :) Anyway, I really loved reading this post. I totally feel the same way! Life is too short to just sit back and never do anything. I just returned from shooting my first ‘destination’ wedding in Las Vegas. I almost turned it down because I didn’t believe I was good enough and could handle it. But I thought what the heck and took it anyway and had an absolute blast. Life is what you make it. I’m excited to see where your next trip takes you. :)
ChristyOctober 3, 2011 – 7:29 pm

Liz - THANK YOU.

Your inspiration comes from a distant cousin. Funny how strangers can think and believe the same. I am 29, treading water in the same old town, going no where…(on the Least Coast ha). My dreams have escaped me, but in the end need to speak louder than my actions. Perhaps this will change THIS year.

My camera has been broken, and I want and need to fix it but cannot. My pocket book is empty. I still have my Nikon SLR (film)…wondering if I should bring it back and go with it as it has yet to fail 12 years later. All you have to maintain is a battery and film. Ho hum, thoughts?September 29, 2011 – 5:50 pm

Erin Oveis Brant - Amen. And I’ll take that hi-five in person when I get out there (in less than 35 days!!!)!September 29, 2011 – 2:23 pm

Lisa Glazebrook - I want to thank you for the inspiration. I took a trip cross country to go to Burning Man, and it was definitely a life changing experience. I’m not sure I would have jumped out on the limb and did it if it wasn’t for all the inspiration I received when I was in Denver. But, as you said, I want more!!!! I’m not done traveling. I can’t wait for my next adventure!September 29, 2011 – 10:08 am

Jason Kirby - Couldn’t agree with you more, it tears me apart seeing my close friends back down from opportunities that only come once because of things that will still be there tomorrow. Hopefully someone takes your post to heart and does something about it.September 29, 2011 – 7:26 am

Dan Dilworth - I think the defining part of this post is that transition moving from attempting to emulate those whom you feel have “made it” versus turning that telescope inward and really focusing on turning yourself into a brand. The people whom you’ve chosen to call out as inspiration possess characteristics that embody a strong work ethic and life philosophy that would make someone successful in any field, not just photography. It can be liberating having a solid understanding of your own self and brand and having that reflected in your photography, because at that point you’re not “chasing” clients, you’re being true to yourself and “attracting” the right client. You’re on the right path grasshopper :)

MikeW - I read your James Law interview a few weeks back. Consider this a mix of that with some business questions.

- What are your favorite focal lengths and why?
- If you could only take one lens on a trip, which one would it be?
- Do you ever get model releases?
- How much do you think you have invested in your business?(Ballpark)
- Do you prefer to use flash or natural light/high ISO/F stop combo for your event work (Gala/Dinner/Club) at night?
- What is your set up for your photo booths?(softbox size, Butterfly Lighting?, etc)
- What type of lighting do you use? (#of lights, Softbox, etc)
- What’s the best score you have had on the golf course? (or at least best shot/hole)
- You mentioned a psychology background. Ever take the Myers Briggs assessment?
- What’s the worst thing about being a full time photographer?
- Biggest mishap while shooting?
- Favorite city that you have traveled to?
- When doing travel work (engagements etc) do you just charge more to make up for the additional expenses(Airfare/hotel)?
- Describe your workflow. (shoot, backup, LR3, PS CS5, export)
- How much time do you usually spend processing?
- What is your favorite thing to shoot?
- Person/place/thing that you would love to shoot given the opportunity?
- Describe the day/moment that you decided to do Photography full time instead of a “regular” 9-5.(I read the earlier post but it’s always good to hear someone say it)
- What are your 3 favorite images and what do they convey about you/your style?
- I consider you to be really good, but do you still wake up with self-doubt or dislike for your photos every now and then?

Thanks for taking the time to do something like this.April 11, 2011 – 7:44 pm

Tony - found you through creativelive awesome stuff. one thing I did not hear being discuss is how do you process payment, form clients is it when they hire you do you use a paypal like system for half when they hire you online and then you get the rest in person? and also when shooting lets say a wedding or engagement session in a place do you have permits to photograph there or do you just go and shoot. by the way your photographs are awesome.April 10, 2011 – 10:01 pm

Boris - Hi Tim,

I discovered you @creativelive this week-end. Like other i want to know your process and workflow. You have a very great style and eye.
I downloaded some of your pics to see the exif info so i could see that you have several great lenses (24 1.4LII, 50 1.2L, 85 1.2LII, 16-35 2.8L…) and also you use very hight ISO.. i’m always in two minds to use hight iso (i have a MKII as well) Are you using a specific software for your raw files ?
i’m looking forward your next post ! Thanks for sharing.

BorisApril 10, 2011 – 8:54 pm

Mark - Hey Tim,

Scott Thompson - Aight Tim I tryed to do my best to deliver a straight live vid of my april fools joke. Threw some siricha into our coffee pot at work.My bro fell right into the trap.I kinda blew it at the end cause i started bustin up but i told you I was going for the attempt.

dont know if this link takes you to the vid but its on my facebook page . HahaApril 2, 2011 – 5:14 pm

Katie Bane - My former teacher pulled this prank this year when taking 45 students to San Diego on a field trip.
She told them on the bus on the way back from seaport village that the hotel found illegal substances in one of the rooms. That when we get back to the hotel that everyone is packing up and we were going home tonight! She was so harsh. The disappointed tone, followed by angry. She let them stew then yelled April fools!!

Dont care if I win. Just thought this was too funny.April 2, 2011 – 1:33 pm

Kristina - A friend forwarded me this link saying I HAVE to share my April Fool’s prank from yesterday considering how well it went. To put it simply, I created an event on facebook for a fake celebrity-studded event to be held @ XYZ in the W Hotel in San Francisco for the LS Foundation (Lurpa Sloof Foundation). Celebrity appearances included: Lady Gaga and Kim Kardashian…as well as Giants’ Buster Posey, Robin Williams, Alicia Silverstone, and former SF mayor Gavin Newsom (since they’re from SF).

It was to be hosted by Opaque, an actual company (I included the link http://sf.darkdining.com/ to add realism) that holds events where you dine in pitch black darkness. Attire was to be any kind of sleepwear from footie pajamas to sexy lingerie to…nude.

This event got much more attention than I had expected. I received endless messages of people trying to RSVP by the midnight deadline. Just after the deadline hit, I broke the news that “Lurpa Sloof” is April Fools spelled backwards and it was all just a big prank.

I ended up pranking 71 people (# who RSVP’d “yes”), after only sending invites to 9 friends in San Francisco. One of my friends (whom I did not send a direct invite to) actually bought a plane ticket from Seattle to SF and ended up having to return it! Needless to say, I had a lot of “I hate you” texts/messages this morning, but it was all worth it. ;)

Here’s the event: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=179372205443873April 2, 2011 – 11:29 am

Emily - I also share an affinity for April Fool’s day, particularly because my mom joked about going into labor with me while my dad was out of town (my birthday is tomorrow, so I never forget April Fools).

Today, my co-worker and I wrapped every item in my boss’ office with aluminum foil. From her chair and desk to her phone, keyboard and computer monitor. She had to literally unwrap everything before she was able to start working. Foiling is the new TPing! http://yfrog.com/h7m2vwnj (picture from this morning)

Obviously I couldn’t stop there, so I also put small post-it notes under everyone’s optical mouse. Our office was freaking out that their computers were frozen and they couldn’t figure it out. They were trying to restart and unplug everything, until I finally told them.

HAPPY APRIL FOOL’S DAY!April 1, 2011 – 5:23 pm

kia - I’m not sure if it falls into the category of prank or not. but it worth reading it.
As you may remember I come from a Shi’ite Muslim country. There is a famous month in Islam called Moharam. In this month many people go to mosques every night and they mourn and moan for the loss of one their Imams who was killed 1400 years ago!!! ( This is not a joke,The whole country wears black for that! ). Every night in mosques they turn the lights off and a clerics (Mullah) starts to dramatizing about the moments where the Imam was being murdered by infidels and he encourages the crowd to cry out loud for that. So you can imagine that it is a very serious situation and everyone is crying. usually while the lights are off and people are listening to cleric and crying, a servant from the mosque would come and pour a little bit of rose water on the palm of the hand of each mourner and the mourner rubs it on his face. (It is kind of serves like the holly water in Christianity and people believe that it washes their sins). Now imagine that someone :D :D adds a little bit of ink to the rose water container. since it is dark no one can tell the difference between colors but they can only smells it which of course smells like rose water. after the lights are on almost all the people in the mosque ( sometimes over 1000 people) are entirely have their faces colored. now you can imagine that how pissed they are. :D :D this actually has been done and it is very effective way of mass pranking.April 1, 2011 – 1:51 pm

Summer Werner - This morning my bus driver picked up the last of the kids and continued towards school. All of a sudden the bus stops and Ken, my bus driver, has to pull off. He looks really annoyed and makes a phone call the the bus office. Every one shushes so he can talk. He says he thinks the engine has dies. As soon as he gets off the phone, he tells us that we have to walk the rest of the way to school, which is five miles, and the weather is not nice. As everyone unhappily grabs their stuff he shouts APRIL FOOLS! He got us all pretty good. Hope you had a great valentines day Tim. Love ya.April 1, 2011 – 11:25 am

CJ - Remember when pet rocks were popular? My dad had a gigantic rock delivered to his brother and left it in the front yard with a note that it was a pet rock. The best joke was what happened next: his brother had a load of pea gravel dumped on our front lawn with a sign that said “Your pet rock had babies.”March 31, 2011 – 7:19 pm

Tim - @ Christopher – wow that’s awesome. definitely an A for effort & originality. I’d say you have a strong case for the card so far

@Rachel – make a video of you turning it in – even though it’s not a prank it wins huge points to see someone take charge in life & get out of it what they want. if it’s not working, onto the next!

@olivia – that is COLD BLOODED! i would be scared to be your friends tomorrow haha!March 31, 2011 – 3:54 pm

Alykhan Piredina - here are two links of pranks I have pulled on my room mate in lieu of April fools last year. The first link is a video of me super gluing his fingers together when he was passed out. The second is a video of me pieing him in the face as he is stepping into an elevator.

Christopher Park - In the old days of Myspace, embedded content was allowed for comments on your friends pages. As a flash web developer, I knew that I could make something to post that was harmless but once changed I could redirect a page to whatever I wanted to. Since comments were on everyone’s profile page, I knew it wouldn’t take long for this prank to spread. A few days before April fools, I posted a comment on every one of my friends pages a comment which was a flash embedded file which consisted of a simple smiley face. To my friends, it was just a smiley face that did nothing, but this file was hosted on a web server of mine, which I could change on the day of April Fools. Once changed, a simple action redirected their page to a page that I made.

So enough with the nerd talk, on April Fool’s day, I changed that file to something that redirected to a mimicked page of Myspace that looked exactly like the page you get when you want to delete your Myspace account that asks if you’d like to delete your account with a big yes or no. No matter what you clicked, it took you to a successfully deleted your Myspace account page. Right below that a button that says, if you’ve done this in error, click here to reinstate your account which then took you to a page that said April fools from me. I had a counter on this page which got into the thousands. I of course implemented a way that set a cookie that if it was set, it didn’t redirect you so it only happened once to someone.

Of course this concept was caught on by others on the web to phish for account information which sucks but was shortly fixed from Myspace, but it was a very creative April Fools joke for me to my friends.

April Fools your account has been deleted! Imagine that in the Facebook era, people would lose their minds :)March 31, 2011 – 3:28 pm

Rachel - Turning in my letter of resignation tomorrow. The real prank: It’s not a joke.March 31, 2011 – 3:03 pm

Great post. Reading this makes me want to find the list I made back 10 yrs ago in high school and see what has happen. I also realize that some of the things we have done are taken for granted while others make bucketlists wishing to do those things. I grew up in NY so we visited the statue of liberty every year as a field trips at school and my parents would take us every time someone visit us and we had to go site seeing.

Good luck with your bucket list. I look forward to reading about your journey.August 2, 2011 – 9:24 am

Mike - You’re complaining about getting sun on the last day of a trip to the caribbean, all the while we’re all here at work – you’re enjoying a nice little weekly vacation in a new spot each week. You make me sick…lolSeptember 24, 2010 – 2:08 pm

Ryan Cross - Well hey man, at least you got -some- good photos from the trip, right?September 24, 2010 – 10:44 am

Becca S - Awww so sorry you weren’t able to enjoy the sun like you wanted to! But still, it must have been cool to see another country & visit the caribbean!September 23, 2010 – 7:42 pm

St. Lucia: Day 3

Today was looking GOOD. I woke up to no sound of rain, and when I walked outside, the skies were blue! Today was MY day. I called up a local tour guide named Ali (Ah-lee) who I had met last night to head out for the day. I wanted to hit the petons, the restaurants...

Restoring faith in humanity

Over the course of this month, I’m going to be traveling to a lot of places I’ve never been before, staying with people I don’t really know too well, and walking around with some expensive gear in foreign countries. Sounds like a recipe for trouble, doesn’t it? Well, you know what? No. These days, a...

Jen - Haha great post Tim, I love it when you post stuff like this…while I love all your photos, I think it’s great when you break outside the normal image-heavy posts and talk about an issue or something important we should think about in life. <3October 3, 2010 – 4:22 pm

Ray Padmore - Tim, I think this post illustrates a great point. Although, I’ve got to say that when traveling with such expensive gear like you have, while it is important to “show the real side” of the country, it doesn’t mean that you have to go to places other people are scared of. Most times, that is a pretty good indication that there might be something to be a little wary of. Err on the side of precaution when traveling with those costly lenses, no photo is worth experiencing an altercation over.October 1, 2010 – 12:29 pm

Ali - Hahaha great post Tim. But in all seriousness, you made some good points about the way we view the world these days. I feel like there is so much direction to live in fear via the news, etc…it gets frustrating sometimes. It’s good to hear you ignoring all the hoopla and just doing your own thing. I’m sure you’ll be just fine, because while it may be dangerous in some places, the world as a whole is a GOOD place. Keep us updated on your travels!September 30, 2010 – 9:41 pm

Alyssa Cruz - Hahahaha that last part had me cracking up!September 29, 2010 – 6:59 pm

Mike - I could see Sherry saying something like that. Haha that’s funnySeptember 25, 2010 – 12:08 pm

Jeff G - Man…I definitely would be nervous walking around with a 5d mk ii and some L lenses in another country…even in my own city after midnight…ha!September 19, 2010 – 11:38 am

Clare - Lol your girlfriend is funny. How is she ever going to travel with you and experience the world if she’s scared of it? You can’t live life in fear of the unknownSeptember 17, 2010 – 8:22 pm

Mike - Hahaha great post Tim. Has truth to it at the same timeSeptember 17, 2010 – 12:47 pm

A quick trip back home

I thoroughly enjoy every chance I get to visit my parents. In Colorado, my mom makes the best dinners and it’s great to see my friends from back home. In Bellingham, I get to see my 5-(and a half)-year-old brother and get caught up on what’s going on in his life, along with how my...

It’s pretty sweet the way things work out

This trip is turning out to be pretty crazy as a matter of fact – while on the flight up here, I met a guy named Rocky who would be visiting St Lucia at the same time I would be! I was pretty stoked, frankly because I’ve never traveled outside the country on my own,...

Barry - Cops are assholes sometimes man, hope this works out for you and they don’t show up in court or somethingFebruary 18, 2010 – 4:21 pm

Lauren King - Awesome pictures! In court, let the judge know about the gate–if it’s unlikely that the judge would buy that you did not see the signs, say that you saw them but thought that they were inapplicable since the gate was wide open and you did not see any dangerous activity going on (as you had assumed that the reason for the sign was to keep people away from dangerous activity).

Judges have a lot of discretion and may throw out the ticket–preface the above discussion by profusely apologizing, e.g. “I want to first say that I am so sorry to the officers and company guards for inconveniencing them and causing them concern over my and my friend’s safety. The last thing we wanted to do was cause trouble that day. However, we noticed the gate wide open and assumed that meant that it was safe to enter…”February 8, 2010 – 10:56 pm

The final verdict is still out, but Im sure that we’ll be fine!

Great shots man.January 20, 2010 – 6:17 am

Michael Lee - Great story! It’s very appreciative to see the vulnerability in people and it’s humbling to be open and honest. The character of the photographer has a voice in his photos. Like an iceberg, we know that you’re only showing 10% in your photography and pursuits, and the 90% is underneath the surface. I dig that you’re comfortable giving a glimpse of what’s beneath the 10%……. ya dig!January 18, 2010 – 5:59 pm
