My personal soundtrack of 2011

This past year has been a roller-coaster ride. If you couldn’t tell from the other day’s post, it’s been a pretty crazy one! Inspired by my friend Craig’s note, I decided to put together a soundtrack to remember the past year in my eyes.  I’m not usually one to open up and share such a...

How to save a FEELING

Today’s post comes from some inspiration I received from my friend Craig, after reading a note he had written a few weeks ago.  Craig writes advertising copy and does online marketing for a living, and it’s cool to see it when he brings a little bit of his style out in some personal notes.  Here’s...

Ashley Goodwin - Ps: and then te entire first The Fray CD reminds me of when Marshall and I first started dating. I CRINGE at the reminder that I tried to sing one of their songs to you while hiking. I. Don’t. Sing.December 30, 2011 – 3:26 pm

Ashley Goodwin - Oh lord, I have a ton of songs that bring back memories, and certain SMELLS, too! But “free falling” Tom petty creates serious nerves just like I had on the way to my first day of High School and “Good Life” by One Republic
Sums the feelings of the year up. :). I’m all about a photo that evokes a memory. That’s why I take them!December 30, 2011 – 2:54 pm

Erin Oveis Brant - Every time I listen to The Only Living Boy In New York by Simon And Garfunkel it brings me right back to how I was completely terrified AND unbelievably excited to become a parent for the first time. Looking back on 2011 – Highlights & Regrets

2011 was “the year of travel” for me.  And wow, what a year it was.  Looking back, if someone had told me everything that would have happened, I wouldn’t have believed them. At the beginning of the year, I had just moved out of my old place and was on the cusp of a new...

Photobooth: Fluxx “Aquatic”

One of Fluxx Nightclub’s most recent themes was “Aquatic” in which they had an aquarium in the middle of the club, and had 2 dancers act as mermaids and swim back and forth in sexy outfits.  (They’re really doing things right, aren’t they?) At the beginning of their unveiling, I shot this photo booth for...

San Diego Beer Week 2012

San Diego Beer Week has grown to be one of my favorite events to shoot.  Last year I had the privilege of shooting this event, and this year proved to be even more fun. Beer, brats, bread, and burgers filled the day at Torrey Pines Lodge, San Diego.  The capstone event featured all the best...

Is Jesus good for marketing?

Yesterday I posted about the most common ways to get yourself de-friended or un-followed.  I think I’ll probably risk that with this post today, but I’m confident that if you read what I have to say, you’ll not only agree with me – but have an in-depth understanding of your own decisions regarding involving your...

Lori Ivey - I actually do the opposite. Can I say this? That when a fellow church goer begins to do the wedding inquiry shimmy I shy away. Why? – Because their wedding will probably be LAME.

Sorry – I live in a very rural area in the Bible belt. Just saying.January 2, 2012 – 1:29 pm

Bethany - Tim! Soooo interesting! I watched Jasmine star on CL, and kinda thought I heard you ask a question about how she dealt with “religion”… and I remember thinking that this would be so interesting to hear her talk about. But being that I’m in Australia and it was late, kinda fell asleep.
Fascinating. Fascinating. I once had clients book me out of the phone book without seeing any of my work. They were very happy with the results, and were going to book me again for a naming day, until afterwards, when they saw my blog – and said they were uncomfortable with my religious beliefs…
I still don’t know whether this is a good or a bad thing!
Anyway, completely interesting. Thanks for briging it up!December 27, 2011 – 7:28 pm

SarahV - I am not a religious person (raised Jewish but haven’t followed in ages – there’s something I believe in, but not sure how to explain it) but I see SO MANY people who are photographers and post about their religion and it always struck me as surprising that there seemed to be so many religious ones. l figured it was a strange coincidence and now I wonder if you are right and it is sometimes done as a way to get more jobs. If so, that’s wack.December 27, 2011 – 10:20 am

Mioara Dragan - I love that you harped on this topic. I like to play it safe and keep religion completely out of it, but I do always wonder if the more ‘religious’ talking photographers were being genuine or not…December 27, 2011 – 9:26 am

Saundra McBride - Well said, well handled. I totally agree.December 26, 2011 – 3:02 am

Bennet - Hmm, never really thought about Jesus in terms of marketing. That is, until now! Interesting post, and although you make good points, it would be hard to judge who in the industry is being “faithful” in a genuine way. I myself am a devout Christian and don’t particularly choose to post status updates or tweets (I still don’t get twitter) in hopes of clients seeing them. I agree with you, it’s not something to just be put out there on the internet for all to see, it is truly something personal you should really think about and reflect upon. Thanks for the great write-up Tim, looking forward to reading more of your posts.December 26, 2011 – 12:46 am

Laura Eliza - I agree with this… which is why I chose to leave God off my about page. Am I a Christian? Yes. Do I want someone to hire me because of that? No. I want someone to hire me because of my work. There are some photographers who blog about God all the time or have their faith on their about page, and do it well. But it’s so them, you wouldn’t even think that they wouldn’t be talking about it. It’s part of the image they developed, but in most cases, I agree, it seems to be more of a selling point.December 25, 2011 – 8:10 pm

Laura Hemstad - I have been thinking the same thing for a long time now!! Seriously! There are definitely some photographers that ‘exploit’ there faith and have shady habits. As in, not delivering albums, flaking on appointments, and just shady communication. Great post! Took the words right out of my mouth! Probably wrote it better than I would have though, loved the 50 cent analogy hahaDecember 25, 2011 – 5:50 pm

While it is a tough process to build that stack of followers to your blog, fan page, twitter, or even personal facebook page – I think there’s a lack of concentration on providing VALUE to that fan-base to reward them for taking the time to subscribe to you. Today I’m going to talk about the...

Lauren - I forgot one when we were talking about it last night, but some of these comments reminded me of it: bad punctuation, spelling, or grammar. It’s unprofessional and makes you look uneducated. “Woe is I” and “Eats, Shoots & Leaves” are good books if you need a refresher.December 25, 2011 – 10:55 am

Lee Mills - Well said. You’re an expert photographer and social media strategist! :)

Cheers,
LeeDecember 24, 2011 – 8:51 pm

Tim - @Sarah – I’m so glad you made that comment! That’s exactly what I’m talking about!

@Tara – feat of strength challenge going towards Michael.

@Erin & Ashley – totally agree, I think 2-3 per week is optimum. Read a post the other day from a photographer saying her traffic doubled when she quit posting everyday and just twice or three times per week. I’ll also suggest that losing some followers may be due to both of your recent moves, and if not – consider it just the people that are never going to buy in the first place! I feel like those are the last kind of followers I should be paying attention to.

@Ashley, couldn’t agree more. I think it does a great job at aligning those with the same personalities as yourself. Maybe this week’s recent news might prove to be a direct result of that sort of thing? ;) But yeah, you might hate me for tomorrow’s post – just be forewarned!December 24, 2011 – 6:19 pm

SarahV - I must say that there is a photographer whose work I think is great and before I knew too much about him and before I really followed him closely, I thought he was the coolest thing in the world….and then I saw all of his political, social and religious side and found myself losing interest just because he seems so extreme. I still think he is a great photographer and I definitely welcome someone who is different than me, but some of his views and outside voice thoughts really irk me to no end….December 24, 2011 – 4:06 pm

Tara - It’s Festivus for the rest of us! Feat of strength challenge it is! Some Festivus celebrations have adopted thumb wrestling as a suitable and safe feat of strength so pick an opponent and report back.December 24, 2011 – 2:55 pm

Ashley Goodwin - I thought I was for sure loosing folks too, but I’ve actually had a consistent followIng. But I’m so sick of myself. Feel like during the week is good if you’ve got a lot going on but a few times a week if you’re. It as busy. Don’t want to dilute content do its good to struck a balance that works best for you. And totally avoid those topics, yes, but Im going to talk about things that are supper important to me (like religion) to connect and repel! I’m not gonna preach, but I don’t want someone to feel uncomfortable arounde because of my religion or vice versa. And I just posted about gay marriage myself. POLITiCS!!!! I have clear opinions about it and don’t really care what other people think (all for it, duh) but didn’t need to get TOO political in my post because it wasn’t necessary. I just wanted to put it out there that I am excited for equality and to photograph the unions! But also don’t want Westboro church bangin down my door, so I avoided getting elaborate. It’s important to share your opinions and beliefs though, I think. There’s such a thing as TOO P.C.! People want to know what makes you tick!

Ps: I agree with Erin, your content is very well thought out and researched and you always push me. I appreciate that. I willlll say, you got on ME and wanted more “content”, but I think YOU should post a few posts that are personal. Show us Tim who isn’t all business! (it’s just in your blood, I know!!!). XoDecember 24, 2011 – 2:23 pm

Erin Oveis Brant - This is a really interesting post. I’m positive I’ve been losing followers during this blog challenge (I don’t blame them, I’m kind of sick of myself), but I can tell I’m also strengthening my connection with my “core believers” in the process. I think that 2-3 days a week of quality content and a day or two of posts just for fun, is ideal. But consistency is key, regardless of what that number or schedule looks like. Just like anything else, people want to know what to expect from us. Our “fan” base is no different.

Happy holidays to you and your family!! I really appreciate all the time and thought you are putting into your posts. You are inspiring me to push harder and reach higher even though it can be, at times, a painful process. Thank you!!December 24, 2011 – 1:21 pm

Portrait practice and the KEY reasons to have a photog friend on yo’ level

Natalia - Tim!

What an amazing post!
I was in Russia in 2007. And it was a shock for me too, but pleasant one. Everything was different comparing with Europe, but at the same time there are a lot of things in common.
I adore St. Petersburg and its bohemian, full of history places.
Moscow impressed with Red Square (I really loved!), Cathedral of Christ the Savior, Bolshoi Theater, Novodevichy Monastery… history was written in these places.
I would go one more time to Russia …only for food probably. It is really delicious and unique! And of course, bread bear! :)
It’s huge country and undoubtedly there are so many places to see and new things to experience.
Thanks a lot for sharing! Wish you new interesting trips!

Dan - Tim, I think you’d like this book: http://www.amazon.com/Education-Millionaires-What-Think-Portfolio/dp/1591844207/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

He profiles and interviews a number of successful people who lacked formal education (or college/high-school dropouts) who gained their smarts in the real world.

For example, Walt Disney had to bathe once a week in Central Station when he was starting out because no one would buy his cartoons. And he talks about what they all had in common – the traits of the “Entrepreneurial” (contributor) mind-set vs the “Employee” (entitlement) mind-set.

Anyway, what I really wanted to say was, my friend Jessica runs a marketing agency for non-profits (dogoodcomm.com) and they perform lots of philanthropic endeavours… including high school workshops and teaching. If you’re feeling a lack of fulfillment on the philanthropic side it could be a good introduction for you (I’m sure they’d love your work as well).

JM – I was using the 50mm – shot these at 1.4, 1/40th 1600 & 3200 ISO.December 16, 2011 – 1:36 pm

Ashley Goodwin - Seems like a lot of fun! Happy to see some shots “for you” because that doesn’t happen often! And that giant door? I would have stared at it for a long time before I figured out how it worked. Seriously. I can see my perplexed look now…December 16, 2011 – 11:31 am

JM - What lens were you using / and what ISO? Very sharp, clear pictures for such a low-light, indoor setting without using flash.December 16, 2011 – 10:07 am

Justin Douglas - Did you get a lot of connections?December 16, 2011 – 10:00 am

Tim - @Mom – how do you know what foursquare is?December 16, 2011 – 8:24 am

Prohibition Photobooth

Recently shot a photo booth at a downtown venue “Bootlegger” for the season premier party of the HBO series “Boardwalk Empire”. The venue had this awesome back-room that was specifically for guests who want to enjoy a speak-easy type vibe.  What’s really cool about the room is that when you order a drink, the bar...

Justin Douglas - Love the feel of the photos.December 15, 2011 – 7:45 pm

Jen - haha – these are great :)December 15, 2011 – 6:59 pm

Ashley Goodwin - yo dude, these are fun! Being a fan of Boardwalk Empire myself, I’d agree. the B&W is perfection.

Wait. What was the magic wand in the back of your car for? Ohhh the things that fall out of your trunk when you do photobooths. And I was wondering if you set up a tripod for your photobooths because they are always the same height but I see here you didn’t, I like the different angles! Way to work the furniture!December 15, 2011 – 1:43 pm

Dan Dilworth - Just the right hint of tone to these B&W’s to give them that 1920′s feel buddy. Great selective use of post to drive the concept home!December 15, 2011 – 12:16 pm

Surf & Sand Full Day PR Shoot

A majority of my work outside of weddings is public relations – and they’ve served as a great tool for getting creative “on the spot”.  As in, the shoots consist of a collection of ideas they’ve gathered to promote seasonal packages or menu items – but some kind of tie-in for the hotel. Tiffany Manning - Gorgeous images, gorgeous clothes! So how do you get in to shoot one of those shows, anyway? :)December 9, 2011 – 3:17 pm

Lisa - I don’t know if you realized you captured some of the really big names in fashion – such as Anna Wintour – sitting in the front row. She’s the one in the big round dark sunglasses; you can see her clearly in your shot of Michael Kors and also in a couple others. Pretty much every person in the front row of that show was some big name in fashion. Nicely done, Tim!December 9, 2011 – 2:42 pm

Dale - Hey Tim, Great idea for a post. I’ve blogged every day for over a thousand days in a row and I’ll tell all those photogs who are nervous about being able to do – once you make it a priority, it doesn’t seem so bad. In my mind, it’s not a question of “should I blog today?” – instead it’s “what specifically should I blog today?” Those two words at the beginning make a really big difference. I take the escape route right out of the equation. I’ve found that as I’m more and more consistent with my blogging, the more and more people come back daily (or subscribe) to the blog. The end result is that I’m on my clients’/potential clients’minds every morning when they open their inbox or sign in to the rss reader, etc. It’s been well worth the time investment. Thanks for coming up with a fun way to keep each other accountable!December 7, 2011 – 9:15 pm

Kaitlyn Hanrahan - I love this! I have a travel blog [http://blog.kait.us/] that is pretty far behind, maybe 30 posts will get me up to present day. I’ve been back-date-ing my posts so the date reflects when I was somewhere (rather than when I’m finally writing about it). That might make it hard to see that I’m following the rules from my blog, but I’ll tweet new posts to @kait3210 to compensate. Excitement!December 7, 2011 – 8:18 pm

Ed Devereaux - This interests me on so many levels. There is the fact that it may force me to be more eloquent, detailed and informative on my posts, I tend to write in short sentences. I will have to have ideas prepared ahead of time. http://www.sabotimages.com/blog.htmlDecember 7, 2011 – 1:32 pm

Chantale Perron - Tim, I’m hoping I’m not too late to join in on this awesome challenge!?!?
Blogging has always been a huge effort for me – I blog every couple of months, and feel like I’ll never find enough topics, or nobody wants to hear it anyways. EEEEk! I know I “should” blog more often from a business perspective, but I totally struggle with it. This challenge is seriously the push I need to get me going!!

Please say it isn’t too late…..pppppppppplease!!

This is just the nudge I needed to be proactive and get a headstart on things I want to accomplish in the coming year. Saundra McBride - Ok, so I’m in. For several weeks now I’ve put off updating my blog. (I am in the middle of totally changing my photography business and it’s look) Every excuse in the book. Well, maybe some legit ones were in there, anyway. When a photographer like Tim, puts something like this out there, well, you’d be crazy not to jump in because you know in 30 days you will be better for it, you will learn a lot about yourself, and it will be amazing.

My blog, (bless it’s pitiful heart) http://saundramcbridephotography.wordpress.com/

Have a great evening!
SaundraDecember 6, 2011 – 6:25 pm

I Heart You, Internet | Shane Jeffri - [...] 30-DAYS-IN-A-ROW BLOGGING CHALLENGE / I came across this challenge via CreativeLive and considered taking it on for all of about 30 seconds, after which I realized how much I value my sanity, at least for the moment, and quickly decided to stick with my M-W-F schedule. That isn’t stopping me from checking in on the participants, though. I’m excited to see the content they manage to produce over 30 consecutive days (I start getting a headache just thinking about it). And, dude, they have to be serious entries. None of that one-poetic-photo stuff I’m overly fond of. Not only that, but there are consequences for being a slacker. It’s like boot camp meets reality TV for creatives.
